Behind the Scenes: Sourcing in Paris
Jennifer BumgardnerOne of the most memorable mornings of my April trip to Paris was spent wandering the vibrant street market along Rue de la Voltaire, in the 11th arrondissement of the French capital. The weather was perfect, - cool enough to still wear jeans, but sunny enough to need glasses, - and I'd just wrapped up a weeklong working offsite with my firm. With only one full day to myself before traveling back to Austin (and an empty suitcase waiting to be filled), all I dreamed of doing was perusing the miles of antiques with the intent of sourcing for the shop.
As someone who loves the thrill of discovering vintage treasure, I was immediately drawn to the incredible variety of unique home goods lining the stalls. Walking solo through the market gave me the freedom to explore at my own pace, pausing to admire beautiful artwork, delicate china, and charming trinkets. Narrowing down my choices was no easy task, but after several hours (and two laps), I walked away with twelve carefully selected items (some of which make up my Paris capsule collection here at Howdah).
Heading to Paris soon and interested in following in my footsteps? I’ve learned a few tricks to making the experience as smooth (especially as a woman traveling solo) and as enjoyable as possible.
- Dress the part. Do not show up sporting the typical tourist garb - You'll stick out and risk facing rude vendors and overcharging. Think simple, minimal, chic, as the Parisians do, and you'll blend right in.
- Bring cash! Vendors do not accept cards, so withdraw some Euros at an ATM before heading to the market...But, don't carry it all in the same place, and definitely don't pull it all out at once when paying (another tourist giveaway). Keep some bills in your crossbody and some in your wallet, replenishing as needed.
- Bring a sturdy bag or tote to carry your finds comfortably as you wander, especially if you plan on picking up multiple pieces. Vendors don't provide these, so you'll be on your own trying to carry back that antique vase or framed artwork.
All that said, sourcing in Paris is about more than just buying antiques - it’s about immersing yourself in a local tradition, connecting with the city’s history, and finding items with soul. Be sure to shop with respect to the locals, and most of all, let yourself slow down and soak it in. My morning on Voltaire was truly rejuvenating, and I’m honored to share each of my one-of-a-kind finds with you all, through Howdah. Whether you’re a collector, traveler, or simply curious, I hope this glimpse into my journey encourages you to explore markets near and far with open eyes and an adventurous spirit. Santé!
