Virginia Metalcrafters (VM) was founded in 1895 as the W. J. Loth Stove Company of Waynesboro, Virginia. The company initially manufactured cast iron stoves and wood and coal heaters, but after the installation of a brass foundry in 1938, it quickly became renown for its decorative brass and iron giftware. In the late 1940s, VM commissioned renowned sculptor Oskar Hansen to create a "Botanical Series" in which natural materials (mostly leaves) were collected, moulded, and then cast in solid brass. This 1950s sugar maple leaf dish is one of the more finely detailed of the series, and is in excellent condition. The dish measures 5in. long X 5in. wide X 1.25in. high.
