Medium Suisse Langenthal Plate
Medium Suisse Langenthal Plate
Suisse Langenthal, a brand of the G. Benedikt Group, is a manufacturer of Swiss porcelain that dates back to 1906. The brand is renown for producing items of delicate look, but high durability and this medium sized plate is no exception. Inscribed on the back, are the German words 'gestochen nach einem bild von teniers' which roughly translates to 'engraved is a picture from Teniers'.
David Teniers the Younger was a 17th century Flemish Baroque painter who was an extremely versatile artist known for his prolific output. He was an innovator in a wide range of genres such as history painting, genre painting, landscape painting, portrait and still life, and is regarded as the leading Flemish genre painter of his day. It is unknown which specific piece this plate depicts, or the origin date of the work. I find it to be a truly unique piece, due to the style of engraving and exterior texture!
This plate measures 7.5in. in diameter.
